Client Introduction
Our client, a Canadian body sugaring company, came to us in October 2021 seeking to revitalize their online presence and reclaim their pre-pandemic booking levels. They had been relying primarily on social media and sporadic email campaigns, but their growth had stalled. They came to us through a referral from a peer of theirs in the beauty industry. Along with seeking better online visibility, they were also frustrated with their current web design firm, which was charging excessively for minor updates to their recently redesigned website.
One of their key concerns was that a local competitor was consistently outranking them on Google for their most important search phrase. Interestingly, this competitor was a business we had worked with years prior, helping them secure that top position. We assured our potential new client that, with the experience and knowledge gained since then, we could help them surpass their competitor in search rankings. They were particularly pleased when we explained that the team could handle many of the small website changes they needed without additional charges, which made our partnership an attractive option.
The company had already established itself as a pioneer in the local beauty industry, being the one of the first to offer body sugaring in the area. They opened their first official location in 2015, followed by a second in 2019. In addition to body sugaring, they offer a range of services, including spray tanning, threading, skin lightening, and even natural beauty products. The client is widely recognized as the leading educator in body sugaring techniques within the region. In fact, after we began working together, the owner developed a comprehensive training program, allowing individuals to attend classes and earn certification under her expertise. The Mindset Media team was even tasked with writing a professional Body Sugaring Manual, which spanned 30 pages and was printed in hard copy for distribution.
Initial SEO Assessment
When we first began working together, the client had not previously engaged in any formal SEO efforts, so their initial metrics were modest. We used several tools to evaluate their starting point, one of which was Neil Patel’s Ubersuggest.
As shown in the screenshot, their website had an estimated monthly traffic of 1,170 from organic search, ranked for 1,201 keywords, and had accumulated 101 backlinks from other websites. According to Ubersuggest, these numbers were quite strong for a site without dedicated SEO efforts.
Our SEO Plan
We began by conducting in-depth research into the keywords driving traffic to their competitors' websites. Identifying gaps in competitor content, we developed a strategy to create blog posts optimized around these untapped keywords, aiming to capture additional traffic from Google searches. To enhance our keyword research, we also held a brainstorming session with the client, leveraging their unique insights into what potential customers might be searching for—insights that might not yet be reflected in existing online content. Often, these business-owner-driven content ideas became highly successful and generated long-term traffic.
We expanded the company’s online presence by building business citations across the internet for each of their locations. We also optimized the Google Business Profile for each location, making regular updates, posting new content, and responding to all customer reviews, whether positive or negative. While the techniques behind this process are proprietary, they played a crucial role in improving local visibility.
To support the growing business, we created a separate, optimized landing page for each location, and as the company expanded into other cities and provinces, we continued with this process.
We managed and optimized a YouTube channel, ensuring that video content was interlinked with relevant web pages through carefully crafted descriptions. Again, some techniques remain confidential but were integral to our approach.
Our SEO plan also included a robust backlink strategy, and we timed press releases strategically to reach hundreds of news outlets, further boosting the company’s online visibility.
Finally, we ensured that each webpage was structured with proper hierarchical headings, strong internal linking, and user-friendly features that made it easy for potential clients to click to call, email, or book appointments directly online.

Switching from Ubersuggest to Ahrefs for a broader perspective, we see the following growth in both referring domains (which is how many other websites now link to the client) and top keywords ranking (which is how many searchable keywords will pull up a website in a search engine).
